Wednesday, March 13th

Surf Report comments:

7:45 am: Chilly at the beach again early this morning. Wave height @ 1 foot, to occasionally 1.5 feet. The wind WSW @ 4-5 knots allowing for glassy surface conditions. Our local buoy the early wave height reading is 2.0 feet at 10 seconds down from yesterdays 3.3 feet at 15 seconds. The marine forecast is predicting SW then SE winds today. The water temperature is measured at 65,7 degrees at The Pier this morning. See the ocean live by viewing The Surf Station Cam Page here.

8:25 am: Early morning photos are posted in box #1 and you can see we have smaller surf today. Small overall with waves knee high for the most part. We may need to downgrade the above text data as the waves are considerably smaller than yesterday. Yes there could be a freak high high wave, but most the waves are down to shin to knee high. The good news is the tide is pushing in and many of the sandbars are becoming ‘summerlike’ with groundswell waves peeling across the sandbars at the mid and higher tide

9:00 am; I just downgraded our surf factor as yes it is looking a lot smaller than yesterday.

2:30 pm: New photos from late morning are up and posted in box #2 and you can see some small scale waves are left. Definitely smaller overall with now knee high to maybe a thigh high semi-glassy wave left. It got choppier after these photos were taken as the wind picked up onshore. The best of this swell is likely behind us….

Ooops department: Yesterdays mid day and afternoon reports did not load yesterday so the report may have looked confusing late yesterday and last night. The photos were from the Surf Station Surf School where the young surfers were having a blast.

Here is the overview wind map. Here is the weekly weather forecast for St Augustine Beach, and the 5-day NWS Marine Forecast for Northeast Florida coastal waters. A smaller mixed period (7-occ 10) mixed period swell lingers Sunday morning on the Ponce buoy. Looking upstream, the South Hatteras buoy indicates the small background/residual long period (10-11 sec) ENE swell will continue to gradually diminish. There is hope embedded in Dean’s Surf Forecast “While we will see generally small surf through mid-March, a pair of brief pulses of N/NE swell will filter in on the 19th and again on the 23rd. Then, latest medium-range forecast analysis suggests a strong/persistent high pressure ridge will set up in the Atlantic for the last week of the month, creating a lengthy easterly fetch resulting in a moderate-sized multi-day ESE swell.”
