The World Tour, WCT, One World Ranking; call it what you want. After Brazil, we might consider it the WFT (World Floater Tour)
The judges have a hard job. Yes, surfing is subjective, and yes good surfing looks different to each of us. That said, some really strange, unexplainable scores were being thrown around at the last WT, err WFT in, in Brazil.
Case in point- Adriano De Souza’s backside floater-to-fist pump on a head high left in the quarters. The rabid, brazilian flag waving surf fans go wild. The score? 8.23.
One average floater. One excellent score.
You be the judge. In retrospect, does anyone really think this floater was worth 8 points? Even the judges who personally scored the ride?
Hopefully the Brazil comp was just a flash in the pan for poor judging, and not a sign of things to come. It’s 2011, not 1991, and apparently the ASP judges momentarily forgot.
Nice floater yeah , Ive seen that move stuck on 13th street to the pier on ST Aug Bch by Gabe Kling , U Zander Mort and J Creter to name a few , seems a little nepotonistical ( word ? ) Brazilian wax style for that one trick pony , still sweet , and sour…… Go Gabe , rock the the tour
if you watched the previous heats, big scores were given for floaters in earlier rounds. They gave bigger scores for one “big, critical” move than for 2 or 3 less difficult moves. Was it an 8? not in my book, but not inconsistent with what they were giving in earlier rounds. Parko got thru on a couple similar moves.
Gabe got robbed.
Ed …Thank you sir for the backup on Mr. Klings behalf….. it may only be May on the tour , keeping in mind these athletes are living a lifelong dream / in a whirlwind / paparazzi / pressure cooker enviro, but it only takes a .01 on a scorecard to leave you scramblin to survive , thank you Zander from the locals in S.A. for being on the front lines….and to you Grandmaster Flash Tory and the Surf Station…….always a class act ……….Go Jags…Peace to all
While watching it live Owen seemed to be scored fairly (in terms of comparing it to other heats/waves), but Adriano was overscored.
I’m looking forward to their next matchup…
