I travelled west to visit family and friends in the panhandle of Florida. While I was there, Dennis Litchfield was kind enough to lend me his space, time and tools and help me make a hand plane. A friend gave me the little chunk of foam a few months back and I was itching to actually do something with it. I used to work for Dennis and he has always been really supportive, helping me with anything from boards to ride to good advice. I consider him a mentor as well as a friend.
I also had the pleasure of enjoying the nature of the area: crystal clear sinkholes, incredible cypress trees and their knees, perfect autumn weather.
The hand plane is still a work in progress. It needs a strap and some loving from finer grit sand papers. Since it was essentially a miniaturized version of a surfboard, there was a lot to learn about shaping and glassing processes. I can’t wait to go for a body surf with it though! And maybe there could be a camera mount in its future?
Enjoy.
