With all of the environmental issues our world is facing today, you may ask, why focus on water quality? In fact, the number of people living along the coastline increased over 40 percent in 30 years. This flocking to the coast has lead to toxic runoff increasing ten fold.
A Creative Solution
With numbers like that, the fight against toxic runoff created by coastal populations may seem impossible. But that’s where ToadFish Outfitters got creative. This coastal company is built on the mantra of “Let’s Put ‘Em Back”, but put what back exactly? The answer is habitat-forming, ocean-cleansing oyster shells. The crew at ToadFish Outfitters found that a single oyster filters 50 gallons of coastal water per day, removing toxins introduced by runoff. They also found that oyster populations have decreased up to 90 percent over the past decade due to overharvesting, pollution, and habitat destruction. Their answer to this devastating decline? To “put ’em back”.
“Let’s Put ‘Em Back”
ToadFish Outfitters is involved with several key projects focused on reintroducing oysters shells back into the environment. These recycled shells not only provide key habitats for marine life, they also serve as a safe place for baby oysters to grow. These oyster larvae or “spat” are attracted to these recycled shells, causing them to latch on and thrive in areas where they may not have been able to before. Through supporting programs like the South Carolina Oyster Recycling and Enhancement Program, ToadFish Outfitters has made a marked impact. By partnering with these major projects, ToadFish has planted enough oysters to filter 182 gallons of water a day.
