In early November 2012 myself and David Slemp travelled to Nosara, Costa Rica on a test trip for stand up paddle camps with a upstart company Blue Zone SUP. If you are not familiar with Blue Zones, the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica has been designated a Blue Zone based on research that people in the area routinely live to be over 100 years old. While we were there we scouted locations for teaching SUP in the waves, as well as flat water locations for teaching basic skills and touring. Nosara is a beautiful spot surrounded by lush jungle, and known for it’s protection of the natural environment, as well as one of the most consistent surf spots in Central America at Playa Guiones. The town is also a haven for yogis, with the Nosara Yoga Institute offering training for yoga instructors, as well as multiple daily classes to choose from.
Here is the first video in a series of our trip to Nosara. Here we explore a perfect small right-hand reef point break that picks up south swells, and only breaks on higher tides. The area also has some outer reef potential for the more adventurous! If you are interested in one of our week-long guided Blue Zone SUP camps please email Ed Toy at eddie@surf-station.com and I will give you more information on prices and availability. Our scheduled dates for 2013 are March 16-23, April 13-20, June 15-22 and July 13-20.
