The fourth annual Cinco De Mayo Invitational is in the books, and boy was it a success. Hundreds flocked to 5th street on a hot sunny Sunday to watch the 16 prestigious invites battle (And I mean literally, let’s just say medieval battle axes, water balloon launchers, and ski masks were involved)
Here Matto shows off his creepy mustache (About 20 of us had one) as he gears up for his first heat.
This event is all about fun and riding funky old boards. Our two judges (Matt W and Zach M) based their heat scores on both entertainment and quality surfing, and one never knew which route would make the cut in any particular heat. Whenever there was a disagreement the judges resorted to dice to decide a winner, making for a lot of interesting sudden death moments for the crowd.
Ripko with his oversized ‘best performance by a male surfer’ award for being such an outstanding competitor.
Being a giant NASCAR advocate, it was the perfect fit for a thrilled Rippy.
In the end Chris Ropero came out victorious, mixing a variety of both heavy shredding and quality entertainment (he wore a speedo all day, I kid you not) defeating last years champion Brian “scram” Cooper who made it to the final for the second year straight on an oversized gun and sporting workboots.
He was ecstatic, to say the least. It was his first professional victory. In his victory speech he was lost for words, so taken back by emotion he could only manage one sentence.
“More is less!” “More is….err, wait. Less is More!”
