Litmus has been a highly influential film…for individual surfers and the surf culture as a whole. The 1997 film by The Val Dusty Experiment (Andrew Kidman and Jon Frank) is often credited with bringing back certain types of shapes into the consciousness of surfers. Classically shaped fish, twin fins, eggs, etc. The film is dark at times, serious and artistic…perhaps overly so for some. For others, it was a welcomed break from a genre that had become formulaic.
Litmus has several memorable segments, including Tom Curren’s, Wayne Lynch’s and Joel Fitzgerald’s. But to me, one of the most classic scenes is Derek Hynd on his fish and multitude of other boards at Jeffery’s Bay.
