Great Whites in Jacksonville
Research organization OCEARCH wrapped up Expedition Jacksonville after capturing, tagging and releasing the great white shark Lydia. Lydia’s path can be tracked here http://sharks-ocearch.verite.com/
The footage of Lydia’s capture shows the method used to attach the tracker to her dorsal fin. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IJ0uLh9UAs
Some groups have criticized this method as invasive and dangerous to the endangered sharks. According to the NY Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/25/science/chris-fischer-and-ocearch-crew-hunt-sharks-in-cape-cod.html), one shark in South Africa died during an Ocearch tagging expedition. Ocearch believes their research is important to learning more about and conserving sharks which are threatened by overfishing. You can learn more about Ocearch at http://www.ocearch.org
