The ‘Volcanic’ project has been going on behind the scenes at Firewire Surfboards for a few months now. ‘Volcanic’ references basalt; a rock formed from the rapid cooling of lava… Yes, hot lava. The stuff that comes from volcanoes. In fact, 90% of all volcanic rock on earth is basalt.
In Firewire’s new ‘Volcanic’ surfboards, basalt fibers that are extruded from volcanic rocks are then crushed, melted and further extruded into woven fibers to make up a cloth that is then vacum bagged and laminated with bio resin around each Volcanic Seaside. This Volcanic lamination creates a performance characteristic that is very similar to carbon in terms of weight, flex and response, but because the fibers in basalt are derived from organic raw materials, and then combined with bio resins, it serves as a better eco alternative than using traditional carbon fiber cloth.
