There’s something about Miami that I can’t quite put my finger on. What was once a swamp is now a developed, fast paced civilization that thrives on it’s local and mystique. It’s called the “magic city” for a reason and will always be a special place to me.
After surfing some choppy, cold, northwest wind driven gulf coast waves the day after Christmas, I knew there had to be somewhere breaking that was warmer and could provide some blue water with power. I looked at wind charts, swell models, reports, etc. and the decision was made… head southeast. South Beach is a fickle place, but when the stars align, it’s world class and you just have to be there. These refract swells often only last a few hours when it works.
The next morning, my buddy Chris and I packed the car and charged across alligator alley only to get positive reports from locals and be greeted by 100 + surfers already in the 5 block span of sandbars. You had to pick and choose your battles, but overall, there were plenty of waves and good vibes across the line up. The waves were world class and we only lasted 3 hours before the tide filled in and the swell backed off. Here’s some photos I snapped before I rushed for my suit and board.
Great report – Monday was a perfect day to head south. I was trying to get down there but family obligations had priority – glad you got some good ones.
