St. Augustine and The Surf Station’s Joel Luteran just wrapped up a pretty impressive winter season after 3 months on Hawaii’s North Shore. Joel is now back home in St. Augustine and is excited to take his Stumpnocker boat out and fish with his buddies.
The last month of the O’Neill Wave of the Winter contest window ended with a whimper on Feb 29th. But on Tuesday, Feb 24th, videographer Joe Radano captured Joel on this this epic free-fall into oblivion at maxing Pipe around 11:30am HST.
Many folks are saying Joel’s wave could have been a legitimate O’Neill Wave of the Winter entry if he had pulled it off … but as you can see, instead he ate it super hard on the reef, got rag-dolled on the inside for what seemed like an eternity, and ended up with the heaviest wipeout of his life thus far. Joel came super close to making the air drop … not a Wave of the Winter entry unfortunately, but perhaps Wipeout of the Winter?
All in all, it was a great winter season on the North Shore for Joel. He had a pretty unique goal of getting TWO separate entries into the O’Neill Wave of the Winter contest … one for the Regional / East Coast Southeast and one for Hawaii. Here is Joel’s entry for the Wave of the Winter for the East coast that is very much in the running. Joel appreciates all the kind words and the support from the community and is so thankful for the opportunity to represent St. Augustine and The Surf Station.
