Letter of the Day: New Pier Surfcam
Letter: - November 21, 2021
Hey Surf Station! I’m loving the new Pier Surfcam, but noticed sometimes it’s pointed north of the pier, sometimes across the pier to the south. Is there some rhyme or reason to where and when it faces? One evening it looked like someone was driving it back and forth zooming in and out? I’ve been talking about it out in the water and have heard the same from other surfers like people cant figure it out.
_________________________________________________
Good morning!
Yes since it is still brand new we are still experimenting with it and trying to figure out the best angle. Which one do you prefer?
Usually when move it to a certain side it’s because the side it was just on is not breaking near as good.
The north side next to the pier has the best angle overall and you can clearly see surfers catching waves and riding waves and this is the best view. However on a north wind it can get quite choppy here and when no one is surfing there and it’s crossed up chop so we move the cam to the southside to shoot down the beach and hopefully slightly cleaner surf on the southside.
At night, sometimes we move it to the boardwalk as it’s dark in the ocean and the boardwalk view shows something over nothing.
I hope this info helps and any feedback is appreciated

Letter of the Day: HD Live Cam Chat Feature
Letter: - October 13, 2021
I wanted to advise you that there are many people saying quite disgusting sexual and perverse things in the chat section in your beautiful webcam on youtube.
My children were browsing and looking at your cam and there were adults saying the most horrid things and even attempting to get my children, whom they knew were under again, to join in the disgusting conversations.
I’ve reported to youtube but I fear that nothing may be done. I’d urge you to consider disabling or moderating the chat feature.
Jay D.

Letter of the Day: Historical Artifact
Letter: - September 27, 2021
I remember surfing Hurricane Iris in 2001, and noticing a pipe sticking up out of the ocean just offshore from Anastasia State Park. Someone else noticed it, and asked the Surf Station about it, and I believe Tory answered the question by noting that it was a long forgotten tourist attraction called the “Eternal Flame” or “Flaming Waters”. The pipe was attached to a tank of oil or kerosene that would slowly drip to the surface where a flame was burning on the top of the water.
I was wondering if you could verify this and provide any other information.
Thanks,
Dave

Dave,
Thank you for the inquiry about the history of ‘The Well’ – the pipe submerged offshore and under water just south of the entrance into Anastasia State Park and north of The Pier. Yes the pipe was and may still be there, but I do not recall it the way you describe.
I personally came across the pipe of the well while surfing as a boy- about 50 years ago – when it popped up next to me while surfing. The surf was large and the tide was low and in the trough of a wave just in front of me the suck up caused the huge pipe to emerge from the depths of the ocean. It scared the bejesus out of me! No there was no flame and I have never heard of the description of a flame on the pipe such as you described. No flame, possibly some barnacles, when I saw it. Of note is it made a loud sucking sound as the water was pullin away from the fixed sturdy large pipe.
Yes it would be interesting to do a fact finding mission to find the pipe to the well. It is likely still there, although so many hurricanes have come and gone, it may have been wedged loose and drifted away.
The story I heard related to this , and do not know if it is true… is The Well was there as part of the old Alligator Farm that was at the beach, from when the beach extended way further eastward than it does now, around 100 years ago. This would be amazing to me… as this would mean the ocean has moved in so much that the whole area is now underwater.

Letter of the Day: Mayport Poles Barge Spill and Toxic Surf
Letter: - August 27, 2021
Hello Surf Station community,
I am asking, as this barge incident directly impacted our surf community and Poles surfers without public notification, for you to send this out this link above to a petition and press release on your shop social media and local network for signatures. This spill exposed our surf community, including perhaps your employees and you, my family, friends, community, and me as we surfed unknowingly in PR’s illegal coal ash.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Petition signatures will be hand delivered to Mayor Curry by Surfrider, Sierra Club and St. John’s Riverkeeper. This is a local human health, surf and water quality issue we hope to prevent from happening again with your help.
I’m hoping for a local strong voice from our surf community our Mayors in NE Florida can’t ignore.

Many thanks for all your support to our community,

Nicole ,
Thanks so much for bringing to our attention. We will most certainly sign and post your letter and petition.

Letter of the Day: Shout Outs
Letter: - May 24, 2021
Greetings,
I wanted to give a big shout out to Josh and the crew for lining me up with a 5’11 CI OG Flyer back in early Jan
’21 …. Due to some health issues in the family and work / swell conditions , I was finally able to surf my Flyer on 5-21-21 , the day before my birthday (60) … Love the board so much , surf was a little choppy but had some nice 3 foot faces to wrap into
and feel the classic Merrick hip do its thing … the board surfs as described and is very predictable with nice fin release the harder you push the rails on cutbacks and wraps…
Again , the direct customer focused approach @ the surf-station goes for miles and is greatly Appreciated …
One more retro active shout out to TORY – back in early spring 2006 I called the SS 1 800 ( about 7:30 am – I was rehabbing
My left shoulder from surgery ) thinking I was going to leave a message to see if SS had any O’neil Gooru full suits and to my
Surprise Tory answered the phone and assured my he would check the inventory and let me know as soon as he found out …
3 days later I had the nice stretchy Gooru suit to get back in the surf – FOLKS , this is how you win customers for life !!
Thanks again and GOD BLESS ,
Craig Sutlive

Craig,
Thank you so much! We miss the mark on occasion but we do try our best! It’s super nice to hear when a customer appreciates what we do.
I personally keep my hand in the business in some fashion or form most every day, 36 years into this. I think I remember that phone call from 2006.
Thank you again so much. We are making yet more changes to improve / get better, and thank you for sticking with us!

Letter of the Day: Great Team
Letter: - April 26, 2021
Good Afternoon,
I would like you to pass along my thanks to all your team members. I called last week looking for Generic recommendation for a Big Guy board. I am not so much large as older and a little slower pop up than my previous life. I spoke to your crew in the Board Room who recommended an 8ft M13 Board. I looked at the specs and agreed, nice addition to my quiver. I have a custom Robert August and a custom Migration being built. Both are months from completion and delivery. You had an M13 in stock. One week later it is in my surfboard rack.
Great advise, Great attention, Great shipping. Overall great crew! Thanks to all who were involved and who were not but I assume would have given me similar attention.
The details are in the small stuff, your crew pays attention to every detail and your customers appreciate it.
Phillip Rozga
Surf Station Response:
Thanks so much Phillip!
We work hard to try and make sure we keep the stoke levels high. Enjoy the new board!

Letter of the Day: Buying Surfboards?
Letter: - December 8, 2020
Hello- I know you sell used surfboards, but do you buy them from people? If so, how does that work?
Thanks Shannon
__________
Hi Shannon,
Thank you for reaching out. We do not buy boards outright, but we do offer a consignment option. It is a 70%/30% split, where you get 70% of the final sale price. All you need to do is bring the board(s) by either of our locations and fill out a consignment form, we’ll take it from there.
Please let me know if you have any other questions and I’ll be happy to help.
Thanks,
Josh

Letter of the Day: New Website Format
Letter: - November 13, 2020
New website format you asked for feedback on I don’t like it. What problems did you solve by making this change? Was anybody complaining? Everything was all right there laid out plainly on one page. Now I have to tap to go here or tap to go there etc. to find things that all used to be on the front homepage of the surf report. I thought the other format was perfectly good. That’s my two cents and I m sticking to it.
Thanks for asking.
Anthony

Anthony,
Thank you so much and I initially agreed. I told my staff “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” as I loved the old format and more. They pointed out that the old format is not conducive to mobile and the world is changing toward mobile and we looked it up and more than 50% of people using our website are now on a mobile device and this demographic is growing. The old report on mobile had way way stretched out photos and did not fit mobile at all. Yes it was great on a big computer.
I was at the beach yesterday and a surfer came up and commented on the new site. He said he likes it better as he said it is “cleaner” . I am still getting used to it and still prefer the old one. The good news is we can tweak this new site to make it very much like the old site but better because now you will be able to view it on a mobile device too. The old site was nearly a decade old.
As for your specific observation / complaint, I agree. I like the long scroll with data right there. But it was pointed out we can bring the blogs up closer to the top of the page by breaking the data into clickable links/sections and thus the blogs the staff works so hard on can be much easier to find.

Good morning,
Thanks for the input on the new website! The main reason for switching to a new theme was that Google and other search engines are putting more emphasis on mobile friendliness (over 60% of our traffic is via mobile device) and we needed the surf report website to be up to 2020 web design standards. That said, I have been tweaking the site daily to make it more useable, and you may notice now that if you click on one of the Surf Report thumbnails, it now opens that report in a separate page that has the entire report “laid out plainly on one page” for everyone to read. The issue we had before was that the report was over 2000 pixels tall, and was taking up too much screen real estate on our homepage.
While the Surf Station website is mostly a surf report and forecast, it also serves to provide information about our surf lessons, rentals, surf team, surfing news locally and worldwide, and serves as a source of entertainment and education for northeast Florida surfers. Our goal is to provide a platform that is easy to use on mobile and on desktop computers, and will allow us to expand our content more efficiently into 2021 and beyond. And of course, it allows our staff to communicate with our customers about new products, sales coming up soon and events we plan throughout the year.
If you have any specific issues with the new surf report website please email me at eddie@surf-station.com and I will be sure to fix them right away!
Thanks,
Eddie Toy

Letter of the Day: Buoy Readings
Letter: - August 10, 2020
Hello,
The St Augustine buoy today reads .07′ for swell height when the waves were in the 2′-3′
range. How is that possible when our waves were much larger? I thought that swell height determined swell height.
Thank you. Anthony
Surf Station Response:
Hi Anthony,
The swell height (SwH) can be deceiving. So much of the time looking at just this reading will throw you off! I look at the ocean, and when this buoy reading is cockeyed to what i am seeing along the beach, I look at the other readings. In fact, the main reading I have been looking at in recent years is the combination of the Swell Height and the Wind Waves (WWH) which is the Wave Height Measurement, or WVHT. The WVHT measurement is a combination of both the Swell Height and the Wind Waves and if you just stick with this, it is the most accurate over time I have found. I used to report both the (SwH) and the (WWH) on the Surf Station’s call in 904.471.1122 surf report but now I just talk about the WVHT. Just go by that and you will have a more accurate know how of what size the wave size is along the beach.
I hope this helps!
