Doug, that thing deserves a Surf Station gift card as well!
Thank you to all the contestants and voters!
Until next time…
Wow, might as well have been the neck beard popularity contest. His neck beard was soo weak. Doug, you are a real man! props. -drew
The winner doesn’t even have a neck beard. so confused.
Doug is the people’s champion!! Hr
Although this contest started as a great idea, it turned to rubbish as soon as the voting was done by “likes” on Facebook. So whoever has the most “friends” to like their photo wins? The contest should have been called “post a photo, promote it everyday on Facebook and get people to like it, then win a surfboard”. Great idea, poor execution.
This is crap, the order should be reversed, what a waste.
Thanks for putting on the contest Surf Station – it was fun to be a part of!
Calling BS on that. The order is reversed. Facebook voting is a popularity contest not a true judging contest. Maybe go with a web vote that only logs one vote per ip address next time.
Unfortunately, there is no good way to vote online. Even doing it by IP address can be hacked. Next time we have a contest we are going old school and making people come into the shop and cast their ballot. Live and learn.
Yeah, uhhm Doug got railed on that one. Bigtime!
Glad you’re changing the vote on the next one. Aliens put a crop circle in Doug’s neckbeard and he still didn’t win?!
The real neckbeard champion deserves a prize too! Everyone seems to agree doug was robbed and even surf station agrees but yet nothing is done about it- sad! At least we know who the real man is! There should be a prerequisite that you have been through puberty and can actually grow a neckbeard before entering (much less winning) the supposed neckbeard contest!
Tiki Doug didn’t win??? What’s up with that??? I think the people have spoken. Tiki Doug should get a surfboard too.
We had the best of intentions we we came up with this idea and set up the contest. A free Neckbeard Surfboard to the surfer with the best neckbeard.
Now… we didn’t want to be called partial if we decided the winner ourselves, so we decided to let the surfers out there vote. Most everyone is on facebook so we decided to have it the surfer with the most ‘likes’.
We were going to do it on our Messageboard (the SSMB) but it was pointed out that not everyone is a member and we wanted it to be broad based so everyone can vote. In retrospect, this may have been the way to go (having a vote on the SSMB) as it would have toned down the “whoever has the most fb friends and can politic the most” factor, neutralizing this factor quite a bit, if not all together. The SSMB does allow for polls, and they work fairly well in our Photo Contests.
Yes most rational people would agree that Tiki Doug has the baddest Neckbeard anyone has every seen. But we did not want to change the rules mid stream as that would have been worse, as it would have done an injustice to the surfers who were trying to get people to vote for them, who really put genuine effort in what they were doing. Of course they politicked to get people to vote for them – wouldn’t you if you had a shot at winning a new surfboard? Ya can’t blame the contestants.
We could have not had a contest and just went and gave Tiki Doug a surfboard. After all, he is a heck of a nice guy. But that’s not the point.
So given that we were going to have a neckbeard contest and we were going to allow it via ‘likes” or votes” we really thought the cream would rise to the top, and all out those in fb land would see and vote for the biggest baddest beard of the neck. The popularity thinking of running it this way was sort of like American Idol. It’s a vote and it’s fun and you are never sure who is going to win. In the long run it’s usually the best contestant wins. Not always, but this is what makes it interesting, and even fun. Everyone has a chance.
The bottom line is we had a lot of fun with it, the winners are super stoked, we gave away a surfboard to the guy who won, and we are so stoked we will do something like this again.
