Under the Sun is a documentary by Cyrus Sutton (of Korduroy.tv). The film is a study of the commercial side of surfing and the non-commercial aspects. It compares the lifestyles of competition and free surfers by looking at the adjacent communities of Byron Bay and the Gold Coast in Australia. The Gold Coast typifies the hyper-competitive and industrial part of the surfing culture full of contests, bros and billboards. Nearby Byron Bay is a back to the earth mecca of creative types, earth lovers and soul surfers. The two seemingly opposite cultures have flourished next door to each other, attracted to the region for its world class waves. Shot beautifully on 16mm film, Under the Sun features some great surfing, animations and interviews.
