Surf Reports comments:

7:00 am: Very chilly early on this Tuesday morning. Waves from the N with the waves size @ 1-2 feet. Sideshore N winds at 12-17 mph early. Our marine forecast is calling for increasing N winds today . On the local buoy offshore our current wave heigh reading is 4.9 feet at 5 seconds, up a little in size from yesterdays 4.3 feet at 6 seconds. 7:25 am: Early morning photos are up box #1 and you can see we choppy waves for your Tuesday. Small overall but seems to be on the increase with waves knee to thigh high and on the increase early. The swell angle has rotated slightly since yesterday, which is a sign the swell may increase today….

12:45 pm: Very cool on the sand between rain storms this early afternoon. The waves are looking to be in the 1 to 2 foot range with the occasional larger set wave and a lot of texture. It’s pretty blustery and blown out with our local winds currently coming out of the N @ 17 knots, with gusts upwards of 25 knots. We have a high tide coming up shortly this afternoon at 1:12, with those onshore winds increasing and dropping the temps even more. Overall, it’s looking pretty cold and messy at report time. You can see some photos in box #2 here.

4:35 pm: New late afternoon photos are up box #3 and you can see we now have some more sizable waves for your Tuesday late afternoon. Some easily waist to chest high waves, if not bigger. Drifty, and it’s cold cold cold! The good news is the swell is increasing and at some point, we will get a clean up. The surf factor would be higher, as there are some fun looking choppy waves, but the super cold is keeping it down. Did you hear it’s snowing in Pensacola?

Dean is calling for a cold week ahead and a sizeable (especially south) winter swell in the Surf Station Surf Forecast.

Here is a good link to track near-shore wave height/period/direction and water temperature just off the NE Florida coast: the Fernandina Beach buoy. Located upstream (to the north) and closer to the coast than the St. Augustine buoy, it’s a good indicator of fluctuations in NE Florida surf conditions influenced by winter cold fronts. Here is an overview of a large-scale, real-time wind map to track the shifting winds associated with the fronts and lows that produce our waves.
