6:55 am: The surf has dropped quite a bit overnight. Half the size of yesterday. With that said, it is still sizable @ 4-6 feet, looking at it real early. Not as clean as hoped for as the wind is more sideshore trying to clock offshore. The local buoy peaked at 23 feet yesterday and this morning the 6:22 am reading is 5.9 feet at 13 seconds. We will be back with photos, after sunrise…
7:40 am: Morning photos are up and I bumped the surf factor down a tad (from a 5.00 to a 4.75), due ot the crossness of the swell. Hey but there are some big fun looking outside bombs! Definitely well overhead and with plenty of power. There is big spray off the lefts so the wind is trying to cooperate. If it would clock more offshore, that would be nice…
12:40 pm: Some really fun surf all morning long. 68 new photos are up in box #2 and you can see some lined up long walls. If the wind were more offshore, it would be epic. Lots of size and power and not an unbearable paddle out. The photos were taken from 13th Street and FA and are mixed in, and not organized, but bet you can guess where each one was taken. Figured it’s more important to post than take another hour to organize them. After these photos were taken, it appears the swell is dropping some…
6:30 pm: The surf has been dropping through the afternoon. It got real good for a while there. As the tide dropped, the waves started closing out on the inside sandbar, and with the dropping swell (the local buoy is not down to 4.3 feet at 12 seconds) the surf is not big enough to consistently break on the outside sandbar at many spots. Quite a difference from yesterday when whitewater was breaking out as far as the eye could see.
* Surf Station plug: Open today 12-6. We were told we are currently the only place on the island open that sells beer. We carry all kinds, including Imperial from Costa Rica, Corona from Mexico, and more. So if you need a break after the clean up (whether it’s from cleaning up after Irma or riding the Irma clean up) , come on by and grab a cold one.
* Hurricane Irma and in this surf report in the days ahead: As always, The Surf Station will be here to report on the surf, and what’s happening with Ma Ocean. With the possibly of knocked out power during the storm and this website going down, there are other ways to check with us. Our Facebook page may be easier for us to access and report / update. Also our twitter and our Instagram. We will also try and keep our call in surf report up to date @ 904.471.1122. Yes we will be staying at the beach and reporting and if we go off line, please know we will be doing everything in our power to get back online, and we will see you on the other side. Thank you for all for your thoughts and prayers and for the great support over the years. -Tory
