Surf Reports comments:

7:20 am: We’ve still got chilly conditions early with a decrease in our surf. The waves are looking to be in the half a foot to maybe 1.5 foot range. The winds are light side shore coming out of the NNW @ 3 to 6 knots, adding some surface texture early. The marine forecast is calling for those winds to become SE by the afternoon. Our local buoy is currently reading 2.3 feet @ 7 seconds, down significantly from yesterday’s early wave height readings of 6.6 feet @ 6 seconds. The water temperature is measured offshore at 61.9 degrees early this morning. You can see the ocean live by viewing The Surf Station Cam Page here.

10:00 am: New mid morning photos are up box #2 with the wind now onshore so it’s semi-choppy. As the wind rolled onshore, a little bit more of the swell is allowed to angle in. Yes it’s small overall, but there are some knee high to maybe thigh high semi-choppy waves to be found.

1:00 pm: New mid day photos are up box #3 and you can see it’s not too choppy with some small scale fun waves around the pier. Longborders, foilers, and surfers on small wave equipment are catching the most waves. It’s super sunny and nice at the beach….

Dean’s Surf Station Surf Forecast calls for surf to remain rideable (even highly rideable at times south areas based on swell showing on the Cape buoy). Monday will see a warm, increasingly windy day, with the smallish mixed direction/period swell cleaning up but eventually beaten down by wind clocking hard offshore ahead of a strong cold front. This pattern will be repeated several times during the first half of January as a series of cold fronts push through every 3 days, with progressively colder, possibly frigid air masses continuing to invade Florida through the heart of the month. Surf temps north of the Cape will drop into the 50’sF (potentially low to mid 50’s St. Auggie northward!) by the 3rd week in January. Will there be ice cream headache waves to go along with the Arctic outbreaks? At times yes… nothing huge, and it will be so cold it won’t matter for the hard-core, unable to travel south to warmer/better surf.

Here is a good link to track near-shore wave height/period/direction and water temperature just off the NE Florida coast: the Fernandina Beach buoy. Located upstream (to the north) and closer to the coast than the St. Augustine buoy, it’s a good indicator of fluctuations in NE Florida surf conditions influenced by winter cold fronts.
