I’ve been in South Africa for two weeks now. I won’t have any photos til I get back but thought I would write in at least.
After a day delay in Atlanta, I got lucky and made the next day’s flight. I arrived at night so I didn’t get the grand visual introduction to a new land that one is sometimes treated to. The first week I spent in Cape Town with my friend Lisa. Lisa goes to University of Cape Town and lives in Observatory which is known for being a student area. I didn’t get any surfing done my first week, the weather was no good and it took me a few days to get settled in and get my surfboard.
When I got it though, what a beauty! 5’7 quad fish made by John Bramwell of Evenflow surfboards. He made it with such short notice and for potentially less than I would have paid to take a board back and forth on some airlines. I couldn’t wait to ride it but unfortunately, the weather wasn’t cooperating so it wasn’t til I got to Jefferys Bay that I got to test it out. Not to worry though, there are plenty of excellent land based activities and sights around Cape Town. Almost every day was filled with hiking and sight seeing. Cape Town is indeed a city and the spikes and razor wire on nearly every building serve as a grim reminder of the crime problems that exist. But there is plenty of stunning nature surrounding it for those who wish to get away from the exhaust fumes and honking horns.
After exploring Cape Town, I took the bus to JBay. I didn’t think to bring a board bag so I used bubble wrap and some fcs tie downs to fashion a crude protective layer.
I hope to write more about my time in JBay soon, it was excellent to be sure. For now I’m back and Cape Town and looking forward to a trip to Elands Bay on Saturday. After going right the whole time in Jbay, it will be nice to see a left hand point break.
Best to all in St. Aug, hope you all are getting some decent hurricane swells. I’m looking forward to some of those when I get back.
