Surf Station CEO Tory Strange Reflects on the Hurricane Larry Swell
It’s no secret: good waves make surfers a happy bunch. As Florida surfers, we wait for weeks, months, even years to score size-able, clean waves. This past week offered a dream-like 3 day run of swell, the likes of which St. Augustine hasn’t seen since possibly Hurricane Irma. This time, it was Hurricane Larry that provided solid, organized swell. Surf Station CEO Tory Strange spent the better part of the past week parked behind the lens, documenting the best swell of the year. Here are some of this thoughts following our recent run of swell.
Surfing Makes Us Happy

Surfing puts us in a good mood. Most all surfers would agree with this. That’s one of the reasons we surf.
We usually get short windows of time when the waves get good for a certain high tide or low tide session and that helps us in our cheer in our daily lives. Non-surfing friends of surfers understand this, and encourage surfers to surf because they know there are great rewards on the other side. Spouses especially so!
What happened with the Hurricane Larry swell is we had great waves for days and days and days; more than 3 days of really good surf! What that does is not just enhance our mood, but creates a total positive mindset change. A great mood that is even carrying on into the following week, and likely even longer.
And boy, did we need it with all the chaos and divisiveness in our world.
One thing that unites us all in the surf community is good surf. We all love great surf! The lineups were full of stoke and (with rare exceptions at super crowded breaks) every one was super happy. What a great swell!
