Good Times & Local Tunes to Kick off the SFHD
With Friday the 13th being a day filled with many superstitious events, The Surf Station held a night to remember during the process of bringing back Moose Huerta’s invitational Single Fin Hoedown.
The Surf Station gathered and celebrated the revival of the Single Fin Hoedown from 6 to 9 p.m. in the parking lot of The Surf Station, 1020 Anastasia Blvd. St. Augustine, on May 13, 2022.
With the support of Chris Ropero and Fat Tire, The Surf Station was able to provide pizza, beer, and live music by Kelp.
Kelp consisted of music played by Joe Kelleher, Colin Kosco, Eddie Schwartz, Evan Ulsh, and Tim Kelly.
Task Force Hydro 1 also participated in this event to spread awareness for their charity that actively helps Active Duty Military, Veterans, and 1st Responders with coping with PTSD symptoms, depression, anxiety, and suicide through connections and outdoor physical and recreational activities.
Huerta started the Single Fin Hoedown in 2001, in hopes of bringing longboarders and shortboarders together for a more relaxed surf contest.
“I wanted it to be a common ground shared between St. Augustine’s longboard and shortboard scene,” Huerta said.
Unlike other surf contests, competitors can surf whatever board they would like, as long as it only has one fin. There is also just one division and the surfers that show the most fun, style, and positivity win.
The Single Fin Hoedown hasn’t occurred in 20 years, but this year Chris Ropero teamed up with Fat Tire to bring back the fun, light hearted contest, along with a $10,000 purse at St. Augustine Pier, on May 14, 2022.
