First Day at JBay. 1993, Tom Curren arrived with Derek Hynd, Frankie Oberholzer, Gordon T., Sonny Miller and Thomas DeSoto on this nice sunny day in South Africa. Tom paddled out on a board he had never ridden- a Mark Rabbidge 6’6”x18 1/4” x 2 5/6” round tail with angled concave between the 3 fins and Tom caught this wave – his first real wave at Jbay. The very first ride, right before this, was a quick stand up and kick out due to another surfer taking off in front of Tom. Luckily Sonny Miller and Thomas DeSoto had the 16mm film camera set up right in the nick of time to catch this wave on film. The film reel is safe in the Nalu Vault. This iconic wave was featured in a few movies- The Search, Searching for Tom Curren and also the newer movie Momentum Generation (Tom was a major influence on young Kelly Slater).
