History of the Pipe Masters
Since 1971, the Pipe Masters competition has been held every Hawaiian winter. Originally, this iconic contest was a single heat surf off, making its first pro tour debut in 1976. The contest’s founder, Fred Hemmings, and director, Randy Rarick passed on the ownership of the event, as well as the Tripe Crown, to Vans back in 1997.
’22 Pipe Masters Format
For this year’s competition, Vans is switching up the format a bit. While this is a WSL sanctioned event, results will not factor into CT or CS standings. Vans has invited 60 of the world’s top performing athletes, 40 men and 20 women 16 years of age or older. Vans has also ensured that 50 percents of invitees are local and Hawaiian surfers.
There will be three preliminary heats, hosting four surfers for 30 minutes. The catch? There will be no losers in the prelim rounds. This means that each surfer will get a total of 90 minutes in the water. From this point, the top four men and women on the leader board, based on their top three waves, will advance to their respective finals. There will be no priority during heats, while interferences will results in a surfer’s top score being cut in half for the entire comp.
These elite surfers will be testing the limits of the sport, paddling into waves reaching the size of three story buildings. Among the invitees is Stab High winner and Flagler Beach legend, Robbie “Rasta” McCromick, so you know who we will be cheering for!
