Hey everyone,
Thank you for tuning in! Today we have another Surf Station OG, Brian “Toofy” (as he is affectionately known) has been with the shop since when Surf Station still sold gas… he and Jason Hadjis used to take turns skating the quarter pipe in the parking lot at night before close.
Toofy is incredibly knowledgeable about board design and still frequents the boardroom on weekends to help put customers on the right sticks. He taught me alot back in the day and was around to help start the relationship with Lost Surfboards and also Sharp Eye surfboards. So sit back and enjoy the write up on Brian’s newest custom and his reasoning behind ordering it!

Words from Brian on the thoughts behind this custom order:
“Well…. Some people get a new board and they get a flat spell…. I get a new “good wave board” and we get a global pandemic that shuts down our beaches, so I’ve yet to ride it (it’s a board that’s intended for “real” surf, which doesnt exactly happen here all that often… but I needed a fresh one for “GAMEDAY” but I ordered it based on boards I’ve had and liked (including one of Taylor’s personal sticks).
I mostly ride “daily driver” type shortboards for most of our waves (and a killer black dart RNF retro when its mush ), but when the waves are really good, I prefer riding “performance” shortboards. In regards to those, I’ve always prefer boards that are fast with a ton of drive. I like boards that “push back”, and have ridden boards that some would consider bigger than I need…. A little more volume isn’t a bad thing. I like the solid feel, and when the waves are firing I’ll often put 6++hrs in the water paddling the whole time. Not to mention after a few injuries(shoulder and wrists) , some things have slowed down a little.
About ten years ago I got a 6-3 Ft. Knox…. Skinny and pretty thin, but It went awesome, as long as the wave has some push (I still have it). The I got a 6-2 a little thicker, but killed that one quick. One day at SS2, I saw one of Taylor’s boards… 6-1 x 18 3/4 x 2 1/2. Narrower but thicker than I would’ve gone, but I could tell he really rode and liked this one (deck was pretty crushed, and you could see where he swapped sponsor stickers). It was labeled as a “Remix” but seemed quite a bit different than the stock Remixes, so maybe it was a ZEUS prototype… who knows. Doesnt really matter because that board is pretty sick… fast, responsive, rides the
barrel, etc.. I only would ride it on “game day” as it has a super light Team glass job, and It needed some waves. Unlike MattO I don’t change boards like underwear…when I get a board I like I hold on to it 😉
Well the time had come to finally end a dying relationship. Seemed to get a ding everytime I rode it. Last straw was busting out an obsolete LokBox fin that swell before Christmas (trust me I was on Ebay that night looking ;-)…. That big North swell in November (down south), I took out the 6-3 and it felt so skinny (18 3/4″)… but wasnt big enough to really warrant the step-up….So I ordered myself a replacement for the New Year… I beefed this one up by a 1/4” (maaaaybe I’m getting a 1/4” slower… shhhh). Short enough to fit in the pocket of a decent wave, but still plenty of foam underneath.
Suffice to say, this board came out SICK. Has a good amount of volume, but the rails are pulled down pretty nice, so it feels good under the arm……. Hopefully it goes as good as it’s predecessors. Only one way to find out now! Be smart… stay healthy!”
While we don’t carry the Zeus too much anymore it is available by custom order. Reach out to Josh to discuss ordering one! Josh@Surf-Station.com
